Speech refers to the sounds within words. If your child has difficulties saying particular sounds (articulation) or changes the sound for another sound (phonological errors) we are qualified to assess and provide intervention. We support children with articulation and speech sound disorders. Did you know by 4 years of age, children should be understood by almost all the people they talk with, including unfamiliar people!
Oro = mouth, facial = face myo = muscle function. Orofacial Myology is a holistic approach that compliments speech pathology intervention as it looks at the function of the muscles that are associated with breathing, sucking, chewing, swallowing and aspects of speech development. Orofacial Myology may be beneficial if your child is having difficulties sleeping, is a messy/fussy eater, sucks their thumb, is a mouth breather, has poor posture, tongue tie, enlarged tonsils and adenoids and or has a tongue thrust.
Language refers to how your child understands (comprehension) and expresses their needs and wants. Language development starts from before you are born. Babies learn to detect different noises and speech and often react by pointing, waving and babbling. These are the building blocks for words, phrases and sentences. Language disorders effect the way people think and understand. We can help your child communicate their needs and wants, request help, make connections with others, share stories and understand things such as instructions, concepts, directions, stories and conversations.
Literacy encompasses reading, writing and spelling. The building blocks of literacy start with sound awareness (phonological awareness). This is a critical skill for all children’s literacy development and a predictor of later reading and spelling success. Does your child struggle to remember letters, sounds and/or words, or has difficulties sounding out unfamiliar words when reading and spelling, regularly guesses words or is reluctant to read, spell or write? We provide assessments and tailored intervention to support your child's literacy journey to help them feel more confident.
